Surprised? You are not alone. Most people think it’s pointless to look for a job early in the new year, but that’s a myth. Hiring is a year-round process and there is never a bad time to apply. In addition, now is one of the best times to apply. This is why:

Undoubtedly, there are vacancies that have not been filled for months. Imagine a job posting was posted in November, a handful of people were interviewed, and it was lost in the run-up to the holiday season. They need to get it filled now, and quickly.
Second, hiring managers will likely receive their new budgets and targets in January and be ready to spend. And third, many companies see a spike in layoffs in January, following the year-end bonuses for employees that were handed out in December. This is typically expected by companies, and a strong factor why a recruitment campaign is likely to be necessary.

Once you’ve found what you’re looking for, it’s time to dust off that resume, especially if it’s gotten old since you last looked for a job. Think of it like a marketing document or even a story that you carefully craft to convince the reader, aka the hiring manager, that you have what they need.
Write your cover letter now. Even if only one in two gets read, there’s still a 50% chance that adding one can help you. Start with a clear, concise opening sentence to grab the reader’s attention and make sure the entire letter is no more than one page. Also, if you can, skip the “To Whom It May Concern” and try to address your letter to a specific name.
Then, once you get the chance to interview, be it remotely or in person; prepare, prepare, prepare. Learn as much as you can about the company, from its culture to its history. Research the industry and familiarize yourself with trends and challenges. And practice those go-to interview questions; such as “Tell me about yourself” and “What is your biggest weakness?”
Finally, don’t lose sight of the fact that the application process is also an opportunity for you to evaluate the company and make sure it’s a good fit for you. Ask about the culture and pay close attention to how the hiring manager treats you during the application process. Never ignore your instincts and always do your research.
