He is perhaps best known for his own radio show “The Howard Stern Show”, which aired on terrestrial radio from 1986 to 2005 before being moved to Sirius XM Satellite Radio.
He was raised along with his older sister Ellen by their father Ben, who was in the United States Army and later founded the company Aura Recording Inc. and their mother Ray, who was an office clerk before becoming a housewife. Howard grew up on Long Island, where he enrolled at Washington-Rose Elementary School before moving to Roosevelt Junior-Senior High School. He started playing the piano when he was five years old, and during his high school years he was a member of a band with his two best friends – he was also very young when he decided he wanted to be a radio star.
Howard’s father made him a small studio in their basement, consisting of a tape machine, turntable, and microphone, which Howard then used to record his prank calls, commercials, and skits. He was offered a scholarship from Elmira College, but chose to enroll at Boston University and pursue a degree in communications.
He started his career while still in college, when he worked for the radio station WTBU, and then created his own show “The King Schmaltz Bagel Hour” with his three college friends. During those years, Howard often smoked weed, used LSD and Quaaludes, but he still received his license as a telephone operator from the Radio Engineering Institute of Electronics, and then began working at the WNTN radio station.
He went on to work at various stations such as WWWW (now WLLZ), WWDC, and WNBC, while turning down offers from numerous other stations that he felt would offer him little freedom in his work.
After he started hosting his own “The Howard Stern Show”, he called himself “King of All Media” and released his book “Private Parts” on October 7, 1993 which was a huge commercial success as the first 225,000 copies were sold in just a few hours and a million copies in two weeks.

Howard had promised to bring back the death penalty and abolish highway tolls if he became governor.
In June 1994 he founded his own Howard Stern Production Company and on November 7, 1995 he released his second book “Miss America”. His book “Private Parts” was made into a movie and premiered on February 27, 1997, became a hit and grossed over $41 million in the US.
