Giannis Sina Ougko Antetokounmpo, also known by the nickname ‘The Greek Freak’, was born on December 6, 1994 under the sign of Sagittarius in Athens, Greece. There he was raised near Sepolia by his father, Charles, a former association football player, and his mother, Veronica, who competed as a high jumper. His parents are immigrants from Niger. He has four brothers named Francis, Thanasis, Kostas and Alexis. Kostas plays for the NBA’s Los Angeles Lakers, while Thanasis plays for the same team as Giannis.
Professional career
Giannis Antetokounmpo started playing basketball at the age of 14. Two years later, he joined the Filathlitikos youth squad and started playing for them competitively. In 2011, Giannis played in the semi-professional Greek B Basket League for the senior men’s team of Filathlitikos, while playing in the Greek A2 League the following season. In December 2012, Giannis signed a contract for the next four years with the Spanish basketball club CAI Zaragoza. Since the contract started with the 2013–14 season, Giannis stayed with the Filathlitikos in the 2012–13 season, playing over 26 games and averaging 9.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.0 blocks per match.

In April 2013, Giannis became eligible to play in the NBA. As a rookie, he played in 77 games and averaged 6.8 points, 4.4 rebounds, 1.9 assists, 0.8 steals and 0.8 blocks per game, and played in the Rising Stars Challenge at the NBA All Star Weekend in New Orleans.
At the conclusion of the rookie season, Giannis was named to the second team of the 2013–14 NBA All-Rookie.
