Born Ricardo Leyva Munoz Ramirez on February 29, 1960 in El Paso, Texas, USA, he became known as the Night Stalker, a convicted serial killer, burglar, and rapist, who terrorized the people of Los Angeles and San Francisco from June 1984 to August 1985 .

He was the youngest child of five children born to Julian, a Mexican police officer, and his wife Mercedes Ramirez. When he was only ten years old, Richard developed a marijuana addiction, but bonded with his cousin Mike, who was a decorated veteran of the US Army Green Beret battle. Mike often bragged to Richard about his actions in Vietnam, including raping women. Richard took him as a role model and began learning various military skills from Mike. On May 4, 1973, Mike shot his wife Jessie and Richard was in their house when it happened. After this, Richard went to live with his older sister and her husband, as he wanted to avoid contact with the rest of his family. He started using LSD and became interested in Satanism.

He attended Jefferson High School, but dropped out in ninth grade.

Richard started working at a local Holiday Inn, but this didn’t last long, as he was caught by a man whose wife he was trying to rape, and knocked Richard unconscious on the spot. They filed charges against Richard, but the case was dropped because the couple lived out of state and decided not to return to testify.

First kill and killing spree

In April 1984, he killed 9-year-old girl Mei Leung; he dragged her to the basement of the hotel where he lived, raped and beat the girl before inflicting fatal stab wounds on her, leaving her body hanging from a pipe. Initially, he was not involved in this case, but later his DNA was discovered at the crime scene.

His first identified murder of the Night Stalker crimes occurred in June 1984 when Jennie Vincow was found in her apartment – she was stabbed and had her throat slit, nearly decapitated, and his fingerprints were at the crime scene. From June 1984 to August 1985, he killed 14 people, while others survived his attacks, including a couple from Northridge, California, Chris and Virginia Peterson. He shot Virginia in the face with a .25 caliber semi-automatic pistol and shot Chris in the temple, but they survived and Richard escaped.

Capture, Sentence, Death

On August 30, 1985, Ramirez traveled to his brother in Tucson, Arizona; however, they did not meet and he returned to Los Angeles the next morning.

Because he would leave traces at crime scenes, the police knew who he was and he was wanted all over the US. He became a headline story of every newspaper, and some older Mexican women recognized him and called him “El Matador” (the murderer).

He fled the store and attempted to hijack a car, but bystanders noticed him and gave chase. He was eventually hit on the head with a metal bar by a man from the group of people chasing him, ending the chase. They beat him relentlessly until the police arrived and took him into custody. On his first appearance in court, Richard shouted “Hail Satan” and had a pentagram drawn on his hand.

He was charged with thirteen murders, five attempted murders, eleven assaults and fourteen burglaries – on November 7, 1989, he was sentenced to death. After the death sentence, Richard said, “Big Deal. Death always went with the territory. See you at Disneyland.”. The entire process cost $1.8 million, which was the most expensive process in California history at the time.

However, numerous appeals from his fans, lawyers and his eventual wife postponed his death sentence, and eventually Richard died of b-cell lymphoma at Marin General Hospital in Greenbrae, California on June 7, 2013. He also had chronic hepatitis C viral infection and developed chronic substance abuse over the years. He had waited more than 23 years for his death sentence to be carried out.

His mental health evaluation determined that Richard was a primary psychopath, and had Narcissistic Personality Disorder and Antisocial Personality Disorder among other mental health issues. He was also diagnosed with schizophrenia – his use of LSD, cocaine and PCP only made things worse.
