What is the plot of My Happy Marriage?
Often called a ‘Cinderella story’, Watashi no Shiawase na Kekkon tells the story of Miyo Saimori, a child from a loveless marriage. Born of an arranged union, Miyo’s life is turned upside down after her mother’s death. Able to reconnect and marry the true love of his life, Miyo’s father pushes her aside in favor of his new family.
With a cruel stepmother, a spoiled stepsister and a spineless father, Miyo sees herself as a servant to her own household as her relatives degrade and torment her. Only when she reaches the age of nineteen does she hope to get married and leave the family home. The dilemma, however, is that Miyo has no potential candidates.
To add insult to injury, Miyo’s crush Kouji Tatsuishi – the only person to stand up for her and show her only kindness – is arranged to marry her stepsister Kaya. Instead, her father forces Miyo to marry the Kudou family and a man notorious for his coldness.
While fantasy elements come into play in the story, Watashi no Shiawase na Kekkon is essentially a slow paced story that explores the blossoming relationship of two people broken up by their upbringing. Will Miyo finally learn to trust others in a world that has shown her nothing but cruelty? And is Kiyoka Kudou’s reputation the result of his attempt to stay on his guard?
