When they first met, Stephen had it a tough period in his relationship with his girlfriend at the time, who wanted Stephen to make a choice – marry her or divorce her. Undecided about the next step in his life, Stephen took a break and went to visit his parents, who still live in Charleston. To entertain himself during that reflection time, Stephen went to the Philip Glass and Allen Ginsberg musical “Hydrogen Jukebox”, where he occasionally met Evelyn in line for the theater cafe.
‘Hair. That’s your wife. You’re going to marry her,” Stephen later recalled the thoughts that came to his mind as soon as he saw Evelyn. He was brave enough to finally say hi to her, and the pair began dating. They married in 1993 and in 1995 Evelyn gave birth to their first child, a daughter named Madeline. In 1998, the couple welcomed their second child, a son, Peter, and in 2002, Evelyn gave birth to their third child and second son, John.

She shared her memories of when Stephen had to learn to play the baritone horn for one of the plays he was in, and he only had six days before using the instrument on stage; when Evelyn was waiting for Stephen to come to her house (since they were due to meet that day), she surprisingly saw him standing at her window (Evelyn lived on the ground floor) and serenading her – he finally learned baritone horn playing, although he never attempted to play brass instruments.
