Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson was born on November 26, 1988 under the sign of Sagittarius in Reykjavík, Iceland.
He was raised on a family farm near the capital by his parents, Björn and Ragnheiður. His father is 2.03 m tall while his grandfather was 2.07 m tall. Hafþór stands at a height of 6ft 9ins (2.06m), while weighing 452lbs (205kgs).
In high school, Hafþór began to pursue his career as a basketball player. In 2004 he joined the Breiðablik team participating in Division I. He stayed there for one year in the position of a center and then moved to FSu (Körfuknattleiksfélag Selfoss) in 2005, also Division I.
