Uber kills Car Next Door brand ahead of US play

Car Next Door car-sharing network will be renamed next month, in the US next year under new owner, Uber

The decade-old company was acquired by the US tech giant for an undisclosed amount in January this year, and the idea will now launch in the US as Uber Carshare in mid-2023.

The announcement was made during a visit to Australia by Dara Khosrowshahi, Uber’s US-based CEO.

Car Next Door has continued to operate independently since its acquisition of Uber, with co-founder Will Davies as CEO, but the brand will disappear on November 8 and become Uber Carshare, updating the app with the new name, ending a ride. which has lasted 10 years since its launch in Sydney.

Since 2013, more than 1.1 million people have booked a trip with Car Next Door. Since the acquisition, the number of cars for rent has almost doubled, with the number of borrowers increasing by 20%.

But the company is still far behind the car-sharing leader, go get it, which started in Sydney almost 20 years ago. Other competing brands available in most capital cities include Flexicar, owned by rental company Hertz, and pop car

Davies said the move is about better integrating the service into Uber’s other offerings to provide a full range of mobility options.

“By bringing our car-sharing service together with Uber’s range of mobility options, Aussies now have access to a better way to get around – whether they want to take a ride for a night out or borrow a local van to move,” he said.

“We are very proud to have developed a technology and service here in Australia that will soon be exported to the world via the Uber platform.”

Uber ANZ general manager Dom Taylor said they were excited to launch the concept in international markets.

“Car Next Door is a great Australian success story and as it evolves into Uber Carshare, we can’t wait for it to become a global success as well,” he said.
