Most people would be proud if their relatives’ names were known worldwide. However, the daughter of George and Mirtha Jung spent most of her young years trying to live a life completely separate from her world famous parents. Where is the daughter of one of the biggest drug smugglers of the 1970s today? What kind of life does she have?
Early life and family
Kristina Sunshine Jung was born on August 1, 1978 in the USA. Her parents are notorious drug smuggler George Jung, who was a member of the Medellin Cartel, and his ex-wife and a drug addict, Mirtha Jung.
She had a difficult childhood due to her parents’ efforts.
Mirtha used drugs even during her pregnancy and continued to use drugs until Kristina was three years old, when she was arrested for drug possession. At that time, she was already divorced from George, who was also sentenced to years in prison for his illegal activities. Because of this, Kristina was raised by her paternal grandparents Ermine and Frederick Jung. For a long time, they provided stability and security for her away from her parents. They gave her a new box of toys and clothes every year and did their best to give her a normal childhood.
When Kristina’s grandfather died, custody passed to her aunt, Marie Jung, with whom she remained until her 18th birthday. However, during her childhood, she has been close with her mother, who left behind drugs and beans and led a clean life for the sake of her daughter.
As of June 2020, no information has been released about Kristina’s exact birthplace and the schools she attended.
In 2001, the movie “Blow” starring Johnny Depp, Penelope Cruz and Franka Potente was released, which focused on the life story of George Jung, his wife and his daughter.
The film was nominated for an Academy Award and brought the Jung family back into the news. Kristina herself appeared in a deleted scene in the movie, as one of the people in the courtroom. In the movie, Kristina was played by Emma Roberts.
The movie was based on Bruce Porter’s book called “Blow: How a Small Town Boy Made $100 Million with the Medellin Cocaine Cartel and Lost It All” which was published in 1993.
George Jung was a major figure in illegal cocaine smuggling in the 1970s and early 1980s. He became a big name in the cartel after he started working with his former cellmate, Carlos Lehder.
The two became the leaders of one of the first and largest drug smuggling operations between Colombia and the US – smuggling about 80% of the world’s cocaine in the early 1980s. George was arrested several times for his activities – finally in 1994 he was detained in Topeka, Kansas, USA, and sentenced to 60 years in prison. Jung was released in 2014 after serving 20 years, but has since had at least one minor arrest.
According to the film, Kristina never visited her father in prison, despite his constant wishes and pleas, and their relationship was distant, unlike her connection to her mother Mirtha.
However reports state that their relationship improved after the film and that Kristina made her first visit in 2002, a year after the film was released. She remained a regular visitor until he was released in 2014, and was said to be one of the first to “call” him.
George Jung’s life was described in several other books, such as Al Cimino’s “Drug Wars: the Blood Reign of Mexican Cartels” and William Rodriguez-Abadia’s “Yo Soy El Hiro Del Cartel De Cali”.
Kristina tied the knot with Romain Karan, and they have a daughter they named Athena Romina Karan. As of June 2020, the couple lives in California.
Almost nothing is known about their private lives as they stay out of the limelight, but they have lived in several California cities, including San Mateo, Millbrae, Concord, and Walnut Creek.
She is active on the social media platform Instagram, on which she has more than 35,000 followers. Although her profile is private, it is noticeable that she no longer has any issues with who her father is, as she is referred to as the “Smuggler’s Daughter” in her caption. In fact, she even created her own clothing line – Smuggler’s daughter’s clothes (a.k.a. Boston George Apparel and Merchandise) — and sells several pieces of clothing with captions like “Cocaine express” and “Blow.”

She often expresses gratitude towards her grandparents on her Instagram posts.
Kristina also has a Facebook profile, but she hasn’t been very active on it in recent years.
In contrast to her childhood, Kristina seems to be much closer to her father than she is to her mother over the past ten years, at least in public. One of the reasons for this may be that Mirtha Jung rejects public appearances and tries to lead a private life.
Kristina is under police custody on charges of drug possession.
Kristina is a poet and writer; she is said to be working on a book that will chronicle her mother’s life.
Since her father George Jung lost all his fortune when he was arrested in 1994, Kristina would never have benefited from her father’s illegally acquired wealth. On the other hand, she runs a fairly successful business that sells merchandise, including various items of clothing. On the other hand, the movie “Blow” made a lot of money, but it is not known whether the Jung family made any money from it. The film was made on a budget of $53 million but grossed over $83 million at the box office. As of June 2020, her net worth is estimated around $150,000.
Kristina is a blond woman with a light tan complexion and dark eyes. She is 5 feet 9 inches (1.67 m) tall, but her weight is unknown; she is of average build.
