After graduation, he was hired as the head coach at Ishpeming High School for one season.
Later, from 1979 to 1983, he was an assistant coach at Northern Michigan University. In September 1983, he was hired as a part-time assistant at Michigan State. In addition, Tom Izzo was an assistant coach at the University of Tulsa for two months in 1986.
