As a teenager, he began training to learn how to wrestle under the tutelage of Kevin Landry, who is known for his brief appearances in WWE, winning the Hardcore title once.
After training for a few years, he debuted in 2002 as part of the Premier Wrestling Federation Northeast (PWF), who was based in Rhode Island, and was active from the 2000s to 2013. He took the wrestling name Kid Mikaze and won his first title teaming with Mike Paiva during his freshman year, when they fought for the PWF Northeast Tag Team Championship during the event, PWF Northeast Vindication. In 2012, he fulfilled a dream when he signed to be part of the WWE roster, making his debut under the ring name Rutherford Hayes. He made his debut on the program “Monday Night Raw” teamed up with Willard Filmore, but both were easily defeated by Ryback, who was poised for a big break within the company at that time. Sarath appeared sporadically as an enhancement talent. then moved to WWE’s developmental brand NXT in 2015 and began teaming with Jason Jordan. His first match was an untelevised dark match where he and Jordan fought The Vaudevillains.
He was going to be part of the NXT tag team division, but a serious injury prevented him from returning to competition. He was then hired by WWE as a costume designer under the name Mikaze, and has been with the company ever since.
Wife – Sasha Banks
Born Mercedes Justine Kaester-Varnado, Sasha’s family moved during her childhood as her brother was disabled and had to undergo treatment in various locations across the US. They eventually settled in Boston, Massachusetts where she developed an interest in professional wrestling. She was homeschooled and during this time she grew up watching All-Japan Women’s Pro Wrestling (AJW) and WWF.
In 2008, she joined Chaotic Wrestling as one of the wrestlers in training, leading to her debut under the name Mercedes KV two years later. She competed in the promotion for two years, competing in tag teams and intergender tag team matches. She competed for the championship a few times until she got the chance against Alexxis and won the title for the first time. While working with Chaotic, she also appeared in other promotions such as New England Championship Wrestling (NECW) and (National Wrestling Alliance). She continued to defend her Chaotic Wrestling Women’s title numerous times until she signed a contract with WWE in 2012, leaving the title vacant.
The success of Sasha Banks
She joined the developmental brand NXT, where she took the ring name Sasha Banks, and became part of what would come to be called the Four Amazons of Wrestling, an allusion to a similar title within the world of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). She was one of the first women to help legitimize technical wrestling in women’s competitions in WWE. Her match with Bayley at NXT TakeOver: Respect was the first to headline an NXT Takeover. She was also part of the former Iron woman match in WWE history.
In 2016, some time after moving to the main roster, she and Charlotte Flair became the first women to headline a WWE pay-per-view event, in a Hell in a Cell match.
During her time in WWE, she was a former NXT Women’s Champion and a four-time Raw Women’s Champion, sharing the record with Flair. She also won the inaugural WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship alongside Bayley, at the 2019 Elimination Chamber.
Sarath first met Sasha during his time in Chaotic Wrestling, and the two became good friends and eventually started dating while both worked in WWE. The two married in 2016 – they have no kids as that would mean Banks would be taking time off from her wrestling career. With their marriage, Sarath became legally related to Snoop Dogg, Daz Dillinger, Brandy Norwood, and Ray J, who are all cousins of Banks.
