The Twitter app has a new chirp sound

A few of us on The edge have noticed something new about Twitter’s iOS app: when you pull down to refresh your feed, you might hear some new sounds. One is a small wind-up trill that plays when you first pull the feed, and after your feed has refreshed, you may hear a short confirmation beep. (Although the sounds are more robotic than any real bird I’ve heard.)

So I made a recording you can hear what i hear. It’s a bit different from the short “pop” you may have heard before when refreshing.

We don’t know exactly when the change took effect, but we first noticed it Friday afternoon and we have a a lot from tweets also about Friday’s new chirping. There are also a handful of tweets that mention a chirp in the past couple of weekswhich could mean Twitter is slowly rolling it out ahead of a bigger release.

This doesn’t seem to be just a change for iOS. A roadside employee on Android occasionally hears the second new sound I described, and a few of the tweets I found about the chirp have been sent from android.

If you want to hear the sound yourself on your phone, just try pulling down to refresh your feed. If you don’t hear it, try force closing and reopening the Twitter app (this worked for me), making sure you’re running the latest version of the app. We’re not sure how widely this will be rolled out, so you may not have the sounds yet even if you try those steps.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to refresh the app to hear the beautiful new sounds again. And again. Maybe just one more time. Last time, I promise…
