The most important tech jobs trends of 2023
2022 was a year of highs and lows for job seekers. A turbulent economic landscape marked by job losses across the technology industry, rising inflation across Europe, and high energy and grocery costs spawned a cost-of-living crisis, which, coupled with a looming recession, understandably made many workers nervous .
Given that environment, it would be easy to think it’s a bad time for anyone looking for a new job, especially if they work in the tech industry. The truth, of course, is a little different.
The layoffs that we see from tech giants like Salesforce, Meta and Amazon to superstar fintech unicorns like Klarna and Stripe are in many cases a response to previously overconfident forecasts and have been made to cut costs and preserve cash jobs as the global economy slows.

However, many sectors and jobs within technology remain remarkably resilient as the effects of the pandemic give with one hand and take with the other. While some e-commerce companies, like Shopify, are struggling because future growth forecasts didn’t materialize once we got back to normal, the flip side is that the cloud computing and SaaS sectors are booming.
The pace of cloud adoption has accelerated tremendously during the pandemic thanks to the rise of remote working. A few months into the pandemic, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said Microsoft had seen it two years of digital transformation in two months as customers started adopting cloud solutions.
More cloud services mean more security is needed to protect them and, as a result, cybersecurity roles are in high demand, as are jobs in the fields of artificial intelligence and machine learning. For example, OpenAI’s recent launch of ChatGPT was an overall success, with thousands of columns in the media. Data science is another growth sector, with the International Data Corporation (IDC) reporting that global data will grow to 163 zettabytes by 2025.
Following broader societal trends, jobs focused on areas such as energy and sustainability, and policy and enforcement roles in environmental, social and governance (ESG) and diversity and inclusion measures are also tipped for growth.
But which jobs are declining?
What the current round of tech layoffs does sharply underline is the kind of roles we’ll be seeing less of in 2023.
Recruiting and HR functions seem to be taking a hit as Amazon announced plans last November to lay off hundreds of its recruiting staff. According to a confidential internal document October 2021, the company has been working on offloading some of its recruiters’ jobs to an AI technology it calls Automated Applicant Evaluation (AAE). Built in-house, AAE was first tested in 2021.
Another area that is slowing is sales. This is broadly typical of a recession and, according to Laid off. for your informationsales positions will account for 20% of technician layoffs, while the consumer and retail sectors will account for nearly 40,000 layoffs by 2022.
As necessary as it is, marketing budgets and teams are often cut when there is a recession and belts need to be tightened. Development and research roles and teams are generally left alone when possible, but budgets for media activations, events, sponsorships and all the other fun stuff around brand promotion often sit fallow until the economic outlook improves.
