The leap second will be abolished in 2035
A global panel of scientists and government representatives has voted to abolish leap seconds by 2035. The ad hoc time adjustment is occasionally introduced to account for the gradual slowing down of the Earth’s rotation and has been a headache for many technology companies over the years.
As reported by The New York Times, member states of the International Bureau of Weights and Measures voted almost unanimously for Resolution D at a meeting in Versailles, France, on Friday. Resolution D calls for UTC to go unbroken through leap seconds from 2035 to at least 2135, in which it is hoped scientists can develop a better system to keep atomic and astronomical time scales in sync.
