Early life, education and career
Growing up in Pittsburgh, Erin set her sights on a career in the medical field at a young age. After graduating from high school, she enrolled at Indiana University of Pennsylvania where she earned a degree in nursing. After graduating in 1998, she began working at Georgetown University Medical Center as a trauma nurse.
She later continued her studies and enrolled at the University of Southern California to earn a master’s degree in anesthesiology; developing a specialization and increasing her skills would mean a big salary increase. While working on her master’s degree, she also served on the staff of the University of South California Hospital. She continued to work in the trauma industry, but eventually stopped working after her marriage to Bernthal. She focused on supporting her husband and raising their children behind the scenes, often being seen filming several of his projects.

He then pursued an interest in acting, at the encouragement of a teacher. He moved to Russia and joined the prestigious Moscow Art Theater, while also earning some money by joining a professional baseball team, serving as a catcher for the next few years. During his time at performing arts school, he was discovered by a theater director from Harvard University, who later helped him get a start in New York City. Initially, he moved there to participate in stage plays, mainly appearing in off-Broadway productions.

After starring in over 30 productions, Bernthal transitioned to television, where he guest-starred in such projects as “How I Met Your Mother,” “Boston Legal,” and “CSI: Miami.”

In 2006, seeing more opportunities for screen work in Los Angeles, he moved there and landed a regular role in the sitcom “The Class”, but it was short-lived as it was canceled after one season. Private life
Erin married Jon in 2010, and the two have been together ever since and have three children. Bernthal recalls a time when they almost broke up just after he moved to Los Angeles with her in tow. The two met at a party in New York and lived together for some time. He made a few mistakes in LA that drove them apart, though he worked to win her back, causing her to worry and convincing singer Willie Nelson to dedicate a song to them.
She is the niece of retired professional wrestler Kurt Angle, who is known for his time in World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). Through this association, Kurt also knows Jon.
