St Basil’s Homes for the Aged sued over alleged COVID-19 breaches by WorkSafe Victoria
A Melbourne retirement home, where 45 people died from COVID-19, has been charged by the workplace safety watchdog.
WorkSafe Victoria has announced it has sued St Basil’s Homes For The Aged In Victoria for violations of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
It alleged that in July 2020, after the Fawkner Home was notified of an employee who tested positive for COVID-19, St. Basil’s did not require employees to wear personal protective equipment.

It also allegedly failed to train workers on how to put on and take off protective equipment safely, verify that staff were competent to use it, tell staff when to use it and supervise its use.
In all, ninety-four residents and the same number of staff members tested positive for COVID-19, and 45 residents subsequently died of complications related to the virus.
More to come.
