Due to the rising popularity of Spy X Family for its intriguing plot and lovable characters, plans have been announced for a Spy x Family musical adaptation of the anime/manga series. This isn’t the first anime to get a musical treatment, though. Spirited Away already had a very popular musical, and there will be a musical for My Neighbor Totoro.

Toho Stage, the production company behind the stage adaptation of Studio Ghibli’s Spirited Away, plans to release the musical adaptation of Spy X Family in March 2023. This will be the first musical that Imperial Theater has produced. The plan is to stay close to the original story and Toho Stage is already excited to unveil its vision of a Spy X Family musical to the public.

Toho Stage noted, “Spy X Family’s original work is the action and comedy manga serialized by Tatsuya Endo in Shonen Jump. Its unique setup features a spy, assassin and Esper who become a temporary family while keeping each other’s secrets. “Adorable and stylish characters, a worldview that is an exquisite blend of seriousness and comedy, and clever storytelling immediately gained overwhelming reader support. Serialization began. Spy X Family received the highest number of readers and comments on Shonen Jump.”

Toho Stage has also announced that auditions for Anya Forger, the Esper kid, have opened. Those interested in playing the part are requested to upload a video of themselves to YouTube. It remains unclear if this audition is exclusive to those who live in Japan, but I’m sure if you’re of the right age, able to fly to Japan, and speak Japanese, you could play Anya Forger!

Spy X Family isn’t the only anime series to be adapted into a stage production soon. Britain’s Royal Shakespeare Company, in partnership with Studio Ghibli, has plans for an upcoming stage adaptation for My Neighbor Totoro in October 2022.

And in case you missed it, a new stage adaptation of the anime/manga series Fruits Basket The Stage has become available to stream outside of Japan in May 2022. It ran from March 4, 2022 to March 13, 2022 at Nihonbashi Mitsui in Tokyo. Hall.

Spies, assassins and espers, oh my!

The Spy X Family story begins with a spy who is given a difficult mission to keep the peace between the rival countries of Westalis and Ostania by spying on Donovon Desmond – the leader of an extremist political party in Ostania. However, Desmond is a notorious hermit and the only way for the Westalis agent codenamed ‘Twilight’ to get close to him is to enroll a child in the same private school as Desmond’s son and pose as the father of the child.

Twilight creates the alias ‘Loid Forger’, adopts a young orphaned girl named Anya (who happens to be an Esper and has the ability to read people’s minds), and marries a woman named Yor Briar (she happens to be a hit man) to a “happy family” that will be accepted in the eyes of society. Luckily for Loid, Anya loves all things spies and excitement, so her help comes in handy. Neither Yor nor Loid are aware of the true identities of the others, except Anya who can read their minds.

The decision to make this musical adaptation is partly due to the fact that the manga series currently has a cumulative circulation of 17 million copies! The Spy X Family anime adaptation aired in April 2022 and has had worldwide success.
