Yen Audio — a subsidiary of Yen Press — publishes the project. The Solo Leveling audiobook is one of four debut titles, including the Overlord and Saga of Tanya the Evil audiobooks.
Publishers One Peace and Vertical also publish the audiobooks Rising of the Shield Hero and Bakemonogatari, respectively. There are currently few English audiobooks from Japanese and Korean media, but depending on the popularity of the medium, we may see more releases in the future.
What’s the use of audiobooks?
For avid manga and light novel fans who enjoy the artwork of a series as much as the story, audiobooks may seem like an odd choice. But just as every medium has its strengths and weaknesses, audiobooks fit into a particular niche that focuses on verbal storytelling while providing the listener with a hands-free experience.
Since work and school take up most of the day, it can often be a challenge to find time to relax with anime or manga. Fortunately, audiobooks present their stories in a way that’s perfect for multitasking. Download an audiobook to your phone and enjoy your favorite novel on your commute!
More scaled down than an audio drama, audiobooks still use talented voice actors to bring the story and the world to life. For some, having a familiar voice telling stories is a comforting feeling. And it can be a relaxing experience to fall asleep while listening to your favorite actors read bedtime stories.
Audiobooks are also a perfect way for the visually impaired to enjoy light novels. Not all books are formatted correctly for screen readers. But the purchase of an audiobook ensures that the work is an optimal listening experience.
