Robin Lord Taylor was born on June 4, 1978 in Shueyville, Iowa. He is of white American descent and holds American nationality. His parents were Robert Harmon Taylor and Mary Susan (née Stamy) Taylor. His older sister, Susan Taylor Chehak, is a recognized novelist.
Taylor was educated at Solon High School. He then attended Northwestern University, where he received a Bachelor of Science in Theater in 2000. Taylor also attended summer architecture camp when he was younger at Washington University in St. Louis.
