Reiji Miyajima’s romcom Rent-A-Girlfriend anime/manga inspires a live-action TV series that premieres in July 2022.

The TV channel Asashi Broadcasting Corporation broadcasts the series on Sundays at 11:55 PM. TV Asashi airs the show on Saturdays at 2:30 am.

The production team includes director Daisuke Yamamoto, known for Ossan’s Love franchise (TV Asahi series), and screenwriter Kumiko Aso, known for their work on Marumo no Okite (Fuji TV series).

Ryusei Onishi, who is a member of the idol group Naniwa Danshi and has starred in the live-action Seiho Boy’s High School! will play the role of the main character Kazuya Kinoshita. Hiyori Sakurada, who starred in the live-action Tokyo Ghoul and Twilight, will play the heroine Chizuru Mizuhara.

Rent-A-Girlfriend Season 2 Anime Teasers Reveal Chizuru Will Have Competition For Kazuya’s Heart

In July 2017, the Rent-A-Girlfriend manga began serialization in Kodansha’s Weekly Shonen Magazine. On August 17, 2020, the manga series received an anthology.

On July 10, 2020, the anime adaptation of the manga premiered and ran for 12 episodes. Crunchyroll is currently streaming the first anime season.

The Rent-A-Girlfriend Season 2 release date is July 2022. The TV show will air in the Super Animeism programming block on MBS, TBS and 26 affiliates.

A trailer has been released for the upcoming second season of the anime, which will feature Sumi, one of the Rent-A-Girlfriends.

Rent-A-Girlfriend live-action TV show story summary

If you haven’t read the manga or seen the anime adaptation, the story begins when Kazuya Kinoshita is dumped by his girlfriend, Mami Nanami, on their month-long birthday. Unpopular with the ladies due to his indecisive personality, Kazuya decides to use an online dating app to find a temporary fake girlfriend and stumbles upon Chizuru Mizuhara’s profile.

She appears to be a beautiful and attractive young woman, but he finds her acting inauthentic and gives her a low rating on the dating app website. The next time Kazuya meets Chizuru, she reveals that she is not as sweet and demure as she was acting and berates him for giving her a low rating.

When Kazuya’s grandmother collapses one day and is hospitalized, he decides to take Chizuru with him. His grandmother is immediately taken with Chizuru and thinks she is the perfect girlfriend for Kazuya.

Due to his grandmother’s approval of Chizuru, Kazuya is forced to continue hiring Chizuru to keep up the appearance to his family and friends that he has a girlfriend. By a strange twist of fate, they find out that they actually live next door to each other and attend the same university. The story gets more complicated as other girls from the online dating app get involved in their lives.
