During AnimeJapan 2022, it was announced that Prima Doll, the anime adaptation of a multimedia project created by Key, will premiere in July 2022. Bibury Animation Studios will provide the animation for the series, a newer studio known for their work on the Quintessential Quintuplets 2 and the upcoming Black Rock Shooter: Dawn Fall.
Currently, the series consists of a web novel, a short story simulation, and figurines created by Kotobukiya, making the anime adaptation the first major adaptation of Key properties since Rewrite in 2017.
The past few major collaborations, including The Day I Became A God, one of the lowest rated series on NicoNico’s livewatch, haven’t exactly been hits, but the framework for Prima Doll seems to be in place to hopefully lead to better adaptation .

What is Prima Doll about?
Prima Doll follows mechanical dolls called Prima Dolls that were originally created as weapons in a war that ended a few years before the start of the series. But with no more war to fight, they take a job at a local coffee shop and work to find their new destiny. Dressed in shiny new kimonos and with new tasks to follow, they live on in this era of peace to sing, dance and live a new, peaceful everyday life in this upcoming original animation.
Who is working on the upcoming anime series?
The series is provided by Bibury Animation Studios with Motoki Tanaka, better known as Tensho, directing the series. He previously worked as a director for the Azur Lane anime, the Kiniiro Mosaic anime and the Rewrite anime. When it comes to Key features, he has a strong history working with them, working on the Little Busters! OP too.
Since he mainly works with real-life media, which are covered in Prima Doll’s ‘light kinetic novels’, there is no doubt that he can certainly bring this project to life. In addition, Kai, the screenwriter for Clannad and director of Summer Pockets, will be the lead writer on the series.
With Bibury’s previous experience with Key, we hope they can bring it all together and bring Prima Doll to life!
