With 23 awards to be handed out, the 95th Academy Awards ceremony was certainly a bit long, but after last year’s theater shows, the evening felt like a deliberate return to form for the Oscars and a fitting end to awards season.
As unlikely as it once seemed, that of the A24 Everything Everywhere Everything at once from the Daniels absolutely dominated at this year’s ceremony, where it ended up taking seven of the 11 awards it was nominated for, including Best Picture, Best Direction for the Daniels, Best Film Editing for Paul Rogers and Best Writing ( Original Screenplay), also for the Daniels. In his Best Supporting Actor speech, Ke Huy Quan thanked his wife and brother for keeping him grounded and by his side throughout his Hollywood career, and in her Best Actress acceptance speech, Yeoh rejected the idea of a woman ever having her best years would have reached completely. .
Between Jamie Lee Curtis’ surprise win for Best Supporting Actress and Paul Rogers’ win for Best Editing, Everything Everywhere Everything at once made sure A24’s presence in the room was known. But it wasn’t the studio’s only film to do well, as Brendan Fraser won Best Actor for his performance in The whale – which was only made possible thanks to Adrien Morot, Judy Chin and Annemarie Bradley, who won Best Makeup and Hair Styling for their work on the film.
Of No news from the Western Front‘s James Friend won for Cinematography, and the film won Best International Feature Film, Netflix’s adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque’s novel more than held its own. And Guillermo del Toro, once the champion of animation, made sure to use his speech for the best animated film to remind everyone that animation is cinema.
