Omid Abtahi is an Iranian-born American actor, who is probably best known for playing the recurring character Salim on Starz’s fantasy drama series ‘American Gods’. Abtahi was born in Tehran, Iran. At the age of 5, he and his family moved to Paris and later they moved to the United States, eventually moving to Irvine, Orange County, California when he was 10. Abtahi graduated from University High School in Irvine and attended California State University. Fullerton. He started studying advertising, took a second major in theater and graduated in 2002. . Before acting on television, Abtahi performed on stage in many theatrical productions, including Fraulein Else at the Berkeley Repertory, McCarter Theater and Longwarf Theater; Adoration of the Old Woman at the Sundance Theater Lab and Your Everyday Quintessential Romantic Comedy at the Kennedy Center. He spent his early childhood in Paris, France, where his family moved when he was five, before moving to the United States at the age of 10 and settling in Irvine, California. Abtahi enrolled at California State University, Fullerton, where he graduated in 2002 and received his bachelor’s degree in advertising with theater as a second major.

Early career

After graduation, Abtahi began his acting career in theater, where he honed his acting skills through a variety of plays and theatrical productions, including Berkeley Repertory’s “Fraulein Else,” Kennedy Center’s “Your Everyday Typical Romantic Comedy,” and the Sundance Theater Lab’s “Adoration of the Old Woman”, just to name a few.

Career

Omids acting debut in front of the camera took place in 2005 when he appeared in an episode of the TV series “JAG”, which was followed by an appearance in an episode of the series “Judging Army”. To greater fame Abtahi came later that year, when he joined the crew of FX’s TV war drama series “Over There”. He was cast to play PFC Tariq Nassiri, an Arab-American with an extensive knowledge of Middle Eastern customs, who served as a go-between between the soldiers of the US Army and the Iraqi people.

In 2006, Abtahi made his big screen debut appearing in Ryan Murphy’s Golden Globe-nominated comedy drama film “Running with Scissors”, then joined the main cast of Showtime TV’s drama series “Sleeper Cell” for its second season. In 2007, he appeared in the TV series “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation” and “The Unit”, before playing the main character in the 2008 drama film “Ocean of Pearls”. Omid later transitioned in 2008, when he was cast in the recurring role of Tony Nazari in the NBC TV Sci-Fi action drama series “My Own Worst Enemy”.

In 2009, Abtahi starred opposite Natalie Portman and Jake Gyllenhaal in Jim Sheridan’s Golden Globe-nominated thriller film “Brothers”, then went on to appear in a string of guest roles on TV series such as “Three Rivers”, “The Event” and “Nikita”. In 2011, Omid was cast in the role of Raqim Faisel in the TV series “Homeland”, while in 2012 he appeared alongside Ben Affleck and Bryan Cranston in Affleck’s Oscar-winning biographical thriller film “Argo”.
