Beginning of early life, education and career

Julianne grew up in Medford, the eldest of four children. She did not initially intend to pursue a career in entertainment, but developed an interest while attending Arlington Catholic High School. The school is located in nearby Boston, and after she enrolled, she was offered a modeling contract that helped her find work in New York. After working as a model for six months, she became uninterested in continuing due to pressure from the industry.

She took a break from work for a while and then rekindled her interest when she was offered a contract in Paris, where she lived for six months.

She then returned to New York and pursued a college education, enrolling at Hunter College as a general studies student. It was then that she wanted to switch to acting, so she started studying the trade while working as a waitress to make ends meet. She eventually dropped out of college after two years to fully pursue acting, and landed her first film projects in the late 1990s, including “One True Thing” and “The Love Letter”.

Continue acting

Nicholson also worked in television, mainly making guest appearances on shows like ‘New York Undercover’ and ‘Nothing Sacred’.

She got some long-term work in 1999 when she joined the “Storm of the Century” series created by Stephen King and is one of the few of his projects not based on his writings. Soon more opportunities came to her and she landed her first regular role in the series “The Others”, which aired for 13 episodes, featuring characters with psychic abilities fighting against supernatural forces.

In 2001, she got some attention when she became a leading star in “Ally McBeal” and stayed until its end in mid-2002.

The show was known for finding a huge amount of popularity during its early run, winning numerous awards and taking the career of Calista Flockhart and other cast members to the next level. Julianne then worked on the short-lived “Presidio Med”, before landing one of her most notable roles in “Law & Order: criminal intent‘, the third series of the ‘Law & Order’ franchise, which ran for 10 seasons, although she was only part of it for three.

Rise to fame

While Julianne got roles on television, she also did film work when she had time.

She teamed up with Demi Moore for the movie “Passion of Mind” directed by Alain Berliner and starred in the independent film “Tully” which also starred Glenn Fitzgerald. The film is based on a short story written by Tom McNeal, and her performance was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award. She also worked on ‘Speakeasy’, ‘I’m with Lucy’ and ‘Seeing Other People’ which earned her a US Comedy Arts Festival Award.

Towards the end of the decade, she worked on the romantic comedy film “Puccini for Beginners” in which she played a minor role, then teamed up with Sally Field in the film “Two Weeks” before being cast in John Krasinski’s directorial debut – “Short interviews with horrible men”.

In 2013, her popularity increased significantly when she played the role of Ivy Weston in ‘August: Osage County”, with a star-studded cast including Benedict Cumberbatch, Ewan McGregor, Julia Roberts and Meryl Streep.

Recent projects

Nicholson has continued to work consistently over the years, working on such films as “Black Mass,” “From Nowhere,” and “Sophie and the Rising Sun.” In 2017, she was cast as Diane Rawlinson in “I, Tonya”, a biographical film about the life of former figure skater Tonya Harding, who became involved in an attack on her rival Nancy Kerrigan, which led to the end of her career. The titular character was played by Margot Robbie and the film received positive reviews for its actors’ performances, but criticism for presenting Tonya as a victim.

On television, Nicholson portrayed Esther Randolf during two seasons of the show “Boardwalk Empire”, which aired on HBO; the show follows the life of a politician who gains control of Atlantic City during the 1920s to the 1930s, and attracted a lot of attention for its story, inspired by current figures of history and its presentation, winning numerous awards. She also received praise for her work in a season of “Masters of Sex”, in which she Dr. Lillian DePaul played. The series is based on Thomas Maier’s biography of the same name, which tells the story of the Masters and Johnson research team, some of the pioneers in the study of human sexuality.

Private life

Julianne met actor Jonathan Cake while filming the pilot for an HBO show called “Marriage”, which was never picked up by the network. The two hit it off and began a relationship that led to their marriage in 2004. The couple has two children together, though they don’t talk much about their relationship. Cake is best known for his work in the 1990s, appearing in several films such as “Mosley” and “Noah’s Ark”. One of his most recent projects is “Desperate Housewives”, where he played Detective Chuck Vance. The pair have no social media accounts and prefer to stay off-grid.
