Beginning of early life, education and career
While Haviland was born in Loch Arbour, her family later moved to Hong Kong where she spent most of her childhood while her father got work in the then British colony as part of the electronics industry. She eventually returned home to the US to continue her education, and after enrolling in high school, she developed an interest in pursuing acting as a career.
She enrolled at Purchase College, also known as State University of New York at Purchase, part of the university system known for its focus on the arts, including courses in music, fine arts, and performing arts.
She became a classmate of another future actor, Stanley Tucci, who would later become known for his work in supporting roles in high-profile films. After completing her education, she started her acting career in 1984 with an appearance in the movie “Reckless”, starring Daryl Hannah and Aidan Quinn.

Her next film project was “Who’s That Girl”, starring Madonna, but it bombed at the box office after negative reviews – the film was Madonna’s second attempt after a previous failure in “Shanghai Surprise”. Despite the film’s failure, the soundtrack was successful, with the title track, performed by Madonna, reaching the top of the Billboard Hot 100.
She then appeared in the “Gremlins” sequel, “Gremlins 2: The New Batch”, in which she teamed up with John Glover and Christopher Lee. The movie continues the adventure of the creature named Gizmo, who creates various little monsters also known as Gremlins when he gets wet.
The film received a mixed reception and some loved it dark tonewhile others preferred the original.
On television, she mainly appeared in guest roles and some television films. Around this time, she appeared in several episodes in the anthology series “American Playhouse”, portraying various characters.
More acting projects
Working mostly on television projects in the first half of the 1990s, Haviland appeared in the “Dead Man’s Walk” miniseries, which is based on Larry McMurty’s novel of the same name, part of the “Lonesome Dove” book series.

In 1997, she did some voice work for the movie “The Fifth Element”, which starred Milla Jovovich and Bruce Willis in the story of a former Special Forces soldier turned taxi driver and becomes responsible for a young woman essential to protecting the Earth from a cosmic evil. The movie had mixed reviews from critics, despite doing well at the box office.
She also appeared in the third movie of the ‘Home Alone’ franchise which didn’t get much attention as it was the first movie without actor Macaulay Culkin that popularized the franchise. In 2001, she got the notable role as Claire Baxter in the soap opera “One Life to Live”.
At the same time, she worked on the show “Third Watch” and left both shows in 2003.
