Early life and family
Monica Louise Horan was born on January 29, 1963 in Darby, Pennsylvania, USA, to parents Robert J. Horan and Selma Spencer, who worked as bailiffs and clerks of the registry of wills respectively. She is a middle child who grew up in a Catholic family with older brother Stephen and younger sister Jennifer.
Educational background
Having been raised Catholic, Monica was sent to an all-girls school for most of her primary and secondary education. She graduated from Archbishop Prendergast Catholic High School for Girls in Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania, in 1980. She was then accepted into Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York and graduated in 1984 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theater Arts.
Career
First step
After college, Monica chose to move to New York permanently to pursue her acting dreams on Broadway. Her father was initially ambivalent about it, but ultimately supported her decision, albeit reluctantly. She was able to secure a role and performed in smaller audience plays known as off-off Broadway theatre.
She did this for quite some time while working as a sales agent for a telephone company called Telecharge to pay the bills. A series of TV appearances followed from 1990 to 1996 in various shows such as “LA Law” with Harry Hamlin, “In Living Color” created by Keenan Ivory Wayans, “Coach” and “In the House” with LL Cool J and Debbie Allen .

Monica made it big when she landed a role in the TV sitcom “Everybody Loves Raymond” in 1997. Her debut was in Episode 14 of Season 1 as Amy McDougall, the on and off girlfriend and later wife of Raymond’s older brother, Robert Barone, played by Brad Garett. Initially, she was only a recurring role for the first seven seasons, but was promoted as one of the main cast in seasons 8 and 9.

Monica worked on the show for a total of 66 episodes. “Everybody Loves Raymond” remained on the air from 1996 to 2005 with 210 episodes over nine seasons. It was ranked by TV Guide’s as the 60the best series of all time, while the Writers Guild of America ranked the show at 63ed for the best written television series of all time. After her stint on the TV sitcom, she went on to do more TV appearances and one of the most notable was her role as Kieran Cannistra in one of the longest daytime drama series, “The Bold and The Beautiful.” It was a recurring role for only six episodes, but took place over a four-year span from 2016-2019. She was nominated for Outstanding Special Guest Performer in a Drama Series in Daytime Emmy Awards.
In 2017, she had a TV reunion with another “Everybody Loves Raymond” cast member, Patricia Heaton.
She appeared in an episode in Heaton’s new sitcom called “The Middle” which aired on ABC. She was last seen in 2019 when she decided to guest star in another comedy-drama series called ‘Better Things’ airing on the FX TV channel.
Private life
Monica was married to Philip Rosenthal on April 22, 1990 and had two children named Ben and Lily. They met in college when they were both studying at Hofran University. He was clearly attracted to her early on, but since he was four years older than her, Philip decided to let her graduate first. However, it was still a few years after her graduation before he asked for a date. It’s no surprise to their friends that they hit it off because they share the same interests. When they decided to marry, Philip’s grandmother objected to the union.

The grandmother did not even want to meet Monica because of her religious beliefs. His family is Jewish and descendants of Holocaust survivors. It would be unthinkable for Philip’s family if his wife did not share the same religious beliefs. Monica, who was raised Catholic, then decided to convert to Judaism. The transition was not difficult, as she discovered at the age of 13 that her biological maternal grandfather was Jewish.
From then on she had a very good relationship with his family. She even called her husband’s parents her friends. The couple will celebrate their 30th in 2020e birthday as husband and wife. They currently live in Burbank, Los Angeles County in Southern California with both their children.

Philip is an American television actor, writer, director and producer. He was born on January 27, 1960 in Queens, New York, but grew up in New City, Rockland County, New York. He graduated from Clarkstown North High School and graduated from Hofstra University in 1981.

He received an Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Writing and won a Peabody award for a 9/11 telethon in America called “Tribute to Heroes”, which he co-wrote and aired live on all four major television networks. His most notable achievement and biggest earner was the TV sitcom, “Everybody Loves Raymond” in which he was the creator, writer and executive producer for all nine seasons. The show won 15 awards including Outstanding Comedy Series and received a total of 98 nominations from Primetime Emmy Awards, Golden Globe Awards, Producers Guild of America Awards, Satellite Awards, American Film Institute and Screen Actors Guild Awards.
Charity
Monica started the Flourish Foundation with her friend Kevin Kane, where they want to support art education in schools.
She later co-founded the Rosenthal Family Foundation with her husband, in which they help by providing funds to support arts education with various organizations such as UCLA Foundation, The Students First Foundation, Homeboy Industries, and their alma mater Hofstra University. This is their way of giving back to the community by helping the less privileged in pursuing their arts aspirations. The Rosenthal Family Foundation also contributes to the Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Los Angeles and funds Temple Israel of Hollywood and Chabad of Greater Los Feliz synagogues.

Monica is an active supporter of the Democratic Party. She and her husband donated $1 million to Barack and Michelle’s nonprofit organization, the Obama Foundation. They hosted a 2014 Democratic fundraiser with Michelle Obama at their home in Los Angeles’ Hancock Park.
