Who are Assanti Brothers?
Steven and Justin Assanti rose to prominence for being one of, if not the, most controversial contestants on TLC TV’s “My 600-lb Life” reality series. The Assanti brothers, primarily Steven, will be remembered for their temperamental behavior, frequent outbursts of anger, cheating while dieting, and failure to follow medical staff’s instructions.
They had a troubled childhood – born in Providence, Rhode Island, USA, the brothers were raised by a single mother who was an alcoholic, and abandoned by their father when they were small children. Both brothers – the eldest Steven born probably in 1984, and the younger one Justin who was born around 1990, developed a food addiction as teenagers, eventually becoming morbidly obese.
Before he became a star of the show, controversial as he is, in 2012 Steven caught the public’s attention for his viral ranting on social media networks, talking about how the taxpayer’s money allegedly contributes to his lifestyle.
“My Life of 600 Pounds”
In 2017, the Assantis were approached by the crew of the TV reality show “My 600-lb Life”, which follows the lives of dangerously obese people, weighing at least 270 kg, over a one-year period, showing their efforts and their journey towards weight loss and a healthier lifestyle.
Patients are under the constant supervision of Iranian-born American surgeon Dr. Younan Nowzaradan, popularly known as Dr. Now called. After the first year of their journey, the contestants can be seen in the spin-off sequel TV show called “Where Are They Now” in which the audience can see the final results of the contestants.
The Assanti brothers debuted on the show in the 13e episode of the fifth season, simply titled “Steven and Justin’s Story Part 1”, which premiered on the TLC on 29e March 2017.
It was seen by almost 1.4 million viewers in the US alone and was followed by an episode called “Steven and Justin’s Story Part 2” which was shown just a few days later on April 5 and has more than 1, drew 7 million people.
At the start of the show, Steven weighed over 330 kg, while Justin weighed just over 270 kg. Due to their problematic behavior, mainly caused by Steven, the brothers were tagged as “the closest fans of “My 600-lb Life” will get to a soap opera.”
Some of Steve Assantis’escapades‘ included manipulative, erratic and often abusive behavior directed at medical staff, and even deliberately throwing a full jar of urine on the hospital floor. He even bullied his younger brother and proceeded to steal some of his painkillers to comfort himself. In the end, that was Steven kicked out from the hospital, and was forced to live in a van in front of his apartment, unable to climb to his apartment on the second floor. In the habit of eating up to six pizzas a day, he actually put on some weight, reaching a maximum of 750 pounds (340 kg) and was then sent to rehab.
After he Dr. Now that he had lost his temper and confronted himself, Steve calmed down and eventually lost more than 35 kg, qualifying him for gastric bypass surgery.
The quieter of the Assanti brothers‘duo, Justin, did not attract as much publicity as his older brother, even though he dropped out of the program halfway through and left the hospital. However, upon seeing the results of his brother’s surgical procedure, which significantly reduced his weight, Justin returned to the program, following the diet and medical advice of Dr. Now and later underwent a gastric bypass herself.
“Where are they now”
Part 3 of the Assanti brothers600 Pound Life Journey aired on the 3ed January 2018 as the first episode of the fourth season of “Where Are They Now”, while the fourth and final part almost a year and a half later, on 22nd May 2019, as episode one of the show’s fifth season.
Justin, has lost a total of over 90 kg and has kept his life quite a secret and far from the media. However, in May 2019, he’broke his silenceand revealed on his Reddit account some of the show’s behind the camera secrets, and also claimed that almost all of it was scripted. After allegedly being blackmailed by the producers, he deleted his post just a few hours later. In addition, he publicly announced that due to their frequent feuds, he is no longer in close contact with his brother.
Talking about their wealth, as of mid 2020, Steven and Justin’s net worth is estimated to be around $100,000 each, largely collected from their TV appearances.
