A Microsoft employee seems to have accidentally announced that Windows 11’s Notepad app is getting a tab function. The employee, a senior product manager at Microsoft, posted a photo of a tabbed version of Notepad and excitedly announced, “Notepad in Windows 11 now has tabs!” with a speaker emoji.

The tweet was deleted minutes later, but not before Windows Central and several Twitter accounts of Windows enthusiasts had noticed the error. The Notepad screenshot contains an internal warning from Microsoft: “Confidential Do not discuss features or take screenshots.” That warning suggests that the tabs feature is still in early internal testing at Microsoft, but the Notepad tabs feature could arrive to Windows Insiders sometime in early 2023.

The addition of tabs in Notepad may indicate a shift to tabs appearing in more built-in Windows apps. Microsoft may have canceled the Sets feature for Windows 10, but that hasn’t stopped Windows power users from using third-party tools and apps to bring tabs to life across different parts of the OS.
