Mercedes has a new transport solution for the eco-conscious unicorn founder who also likes a bit of classic style: the Mercedes-Maybach EQS 680 SUV.

The German luxury car maker dropped its first Maybach with an electric powertrain ahead of the Shanghai auto show this week.

You can expect the EQS SUV to land in Australia from July this year, but you’d better start saving now as the price is expected to be at the high end of the $500,000+ range.

It looks like the kind of car Kendall Roy would take to his dad’s funeral, assuming he comes in black.

If it matters what happens when you press the accelerator pedal, the four-wheel drive car has a power output of 484kW and 950Nm of torque from what the company calls two “permanently-excited synchronous motors”, with a tentative range of up to 600 km.

Top speed is an immediately captivating 210 mph, but in the meantime you can burn down Tesla Model 3 owners by going from 0-60 mph in 4.4 seconds.

There’s 440 liters of boot space, so you can always fit a Nissan Leaf in the back as a backup plan.

And while they don’t get permission from PETA, the Merc-May team has taken the environment into account by using vegetable-tanned nappa leather for the interior. The secret is the coffee bean pods and apparently they save about 100 pounds of salt per vehicle on the leather seats – a tidbit to tell your friends at the next Cranbrook School council meeting.

Mercedes says the leather must be produced sustainably and monitors the supply chain for illegal deforestation. Personally, we wait for them to use cultured meat leather.

The most amazing thing, especially if you’re traveling with windy passengers, is that the car has what’s known as the “Air Balance Package” to keep things smelling sweet.

The release offers no tips on how to get footprints off the roof of the car if the smell gets too tempting.
