Japanese pop culture, artistic creativity and Italian tailoring come together in the new Dolce & Gabbana X Jujutsu Kaisen Special Collection. This collaboration is inspired by the paranormal world of Jujutsu Kaisen, one of the most popular Japanese manga/anime series.

The collection combines DG flair with the unique art style of anime and Japanese street aesthetics, as can be seen in Tokyo’s vibrant and modern neighborhoods – Shibuya and Harajuku (a paradise for anime otaku).

Jujutsu Kaisen anime director Sunghoo Park’s sharp illustrations of the characters gave them a strong, recognizable identity that is translated into distinctive pieces of clothing and accessories within the collection. The T-shirts, sweatshirts and nylon jackets in cotton and jersey, personalized with screen printing, digital 3D prints and Japanese ideograms, have a contemporary look.

In Japan, Jujutsu Kaisen has had multiple collaborations with brands ranging from eyewear to snacks and a UT collection with Uniqlo, which I will talk about at the end of this article for those interested. Now, as proof of just how big his franchise has grown, Jujutsu Kaisen gets his first-ever high-fashion collaboration with Italian luxury fashion house Dolce & Gabbana.

Jujutsu Kaisen follows in the footsteps of other mainstream anime titles that have also carved a niche for themselves in the high fashion industry such as: Maje X Sailor Moon (Launched April 26, 2022), Vans X JoJo (Now Available in 2022), Sandy Liang X Vans, Uniqlo UT X Mobile Suit Gundam (Finaly Fantasy Collection Launches May 16, 2022), Loewe X Studio Ghibli, Gucci X Doraemon, Gucci X One Piece, Longchamp X Pokemon, Coach X Michael B Jordan X Naruto, Jordan X Zion X Naruto sneakers (available now in 2022) and Jojo’s Bizzare Adventure X Balcenciaga.

The Jujutsu Kaisen attire reflects the character’s personalities and backstories

The collection features the main characters from season one, the hero Yuji Itadori, and his fellow freshman classmates and best friends – Megumi Fushiguro and Nobara Kugisaki.

Sophomores Maki Zenin, Toge Inumaki and Panda can also be seen alongside teachers Kento Nanami and Satoru Gojo – “the strongest wizard in town”.

Each of these characters has custom outfits that reflect their unique personalities and highlight their complex backstories. For example, Yuji models a black and white tracksuit with a pattern similar to Sukuna’s markings.

Tomboy Nobara Kugisaki models a black mini skirt, black hoodie with DG monogram in red and a red and green rose pattern that just adds a touch of femininity. The black lace ankle boots also have a floral pattern. This outfit is immediately reminiscent of the expression: “Every rose has its thorns”, made famous in 1988 by the band Poison. Nobara Kugisaki may be a beautiful young girl, but she sure has her thorns!

Megumi Fushiguro models a black leopard print jacket with matching pants, a red, purple and black T-shirt and red, purple and black sneakers. The T-shirt and shoes feature the Tokyo Jujutsu High School emblem.

In the anime, Megumi uses cursed techniques in battle. His primary ability is the Ten Shadows technique which allows him to summon friendly cursed spirits that will fight against his enemies. These “shikigami” take the form of animals, including Divine Dogs, Nue (an electric bird-like creature), a toad, a max elephant, and a large snake. The subtle leopard print is perfect for this “spiritual beast master”.

Kento Nanami, a nine-to-five-salary former, often wears a suit in the manga and anime. Dolce & Gabbana decided to take his style to the next level. He models a neutral, double-breasted overcoat worn over a sky-blue long-sleeved turtleneck sweater. Dolce & Gabbana also designed a stylish nature-themed brooch to match the hip ensemble.

For the sophisticated anime fashionista, may I suggest the smart look of Maki Zen’in. She models a white long-sleeved shirt with jeweled buttons, black trousers, a black leather belt with the DG logo, decorated with rhinestones and pearls, and black patent leather ankle boots, the toes of which are decorated with meltable rhinestones. pebbles.

Panda fans rejoice. Dolce & Gabbana has designed a cute Panda backpack!

For the male anime otaku who wants to look as cool as Satoru Gojo, you’re in luck. Satoru Gojo models a black leather jacket with a large DG logo, a white T-shirt and mixed-material space sneakers that look like they’re straight out of a cyberpunk movie (Bladerunner maybe?).

The black blindfold that Satoru Gojo usually wears in the anime is perfectly transformed into boxy sunglasses with a visor. The transformation is so precise that it reminds me of the movie Cool World where a comic book girl enters the “real world” and becomes human.

Be sure to check out all the other products available in the collection such as hoodies, track pants, graphic tees, shopping bags, card holders and even phone cases.

Uniqlo UT has several anime collaborations

For those of you who want to rock Jujutsu Kaisen style without breaking the bank, the Uniqlo UT X Jujutsu Kaisen 0 Collection is worth seeing! There is a whole line of T-shirts inspired by the movie. Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is an original story from the JJK universe about love and a curse. Yuta Okkotsu is a high school student who is possessed and afflicted by the curse of Rika Orimoto, his childhood friend who was killed in a traffic accident. Satoru Gojo, a teacher at Tokyo Jujutsu High School, wants Yuta to enroll so that he can learn cursed techniques and cast curses.

My best choice is the black T-shirt with “the curse” on it. The curse takes the form of a powerful monster (Rika) that shows up and attacks enemies when Yuta becomes upset or in danger. However, Yuta doesn’t want to hurt anyone and even considers submitting to execution to rid the world of the monster, but the blindfolded teacher Gojo tells him there is another way.

My second choice is a T-shirt with Satoru Gojo.

A message from the UT: “UT is a celebration of pop culture from all over the world. Iconic classics and fan favorites are reintroduced in this exclusive collection of original artwork. In the fields of art, music, film and more, there is something to empower everyone to express who they are and how to wear and share what they love.”
