Dirk grew up in Wurzburg through his father Jorg-Werner, who was a handball player for the German national team, and his mother Helga Bredenbrocker, who was also a basketball player. Dirk has an older sister named Silke who competed in track and field before becoming a basketball player. He started playing tennis and handball while still in primary school, but after being motivated by his parents and teachers, he switched to basketball, partly because he grew to 2.13m. Dirk was 15 when he started playing for the local team DJK Wurzburg, and was then noticed by the famous coach Holger Geschwidner who offered to teach him 2-3 times a week.
He joined the Dallas Mavericks in 1998, but was first selected by the Milwaukee Bucks, who soon traded him to the Mavericks. The first season was bad for Dirk, as Mavericks lost 31 of 50 games. In 1999, the Mavericks were bought by Mark Cuban for $280 million and Mark invested in the team, improving their results, and in 2000 reached the playoffs for the first time in a decade. Dirk became the second highest paid German athlete, just behind Michael Schumacher, a former Formula 1 car racing world champion. Dirk stayed with the Mavericks until after the 2018-19 season when he retired.
Dirk’s sister Silke has described him as ‘a confident but low-key character, unspoiled by money and fame.
