Don attended Baker High School and became interested in journalism while one of the school’s top students – during his senior year there, he was chosen to serve as the president of his class. Motivated by his parents and determined to pursue a career as a journalist, Don enrolled at Louisiana State University in 1984. transferred to Brooklyn College where he graduated in 1988 with a bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism. During his studies, Don was also somewhat sporty as he played football and soccer occasionally.

Career as a journalist

Don started his career while still in college, working for the WNYW network as their news assistant – not long after, he was invited to work for Fox News.

After receiving his bachelor’s degree, Don joined the WBRC network in Birmingham, Alabama, and served as their news anchor before being invited to work for WCAU in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Don then moved to St. Louis, Missouri to work as an anchor for KTVI, and was then invited to work for NBC News, where he served as a correspondent for several of their shows, including “NBC Nightly News” and “Today” – he could also have been seen anchoring the MSNBC show “Weekend Today”. In 2003, he began working for the WMAQ-TV network as their news co-anchor and reporter, and during his time there, Don won three Emmy Awards.
