Youth and education
DaBaby was raised along with his two older brothers by their father, who is an accountant, and their mother, who works as a nurse in a local hospital. DaBaby spent the first eight years of his life in Cleveland, before his family moved to Charlotte, North Carolina in 1999.
He grew up listening to rappers like Lil Wayne, 50 Cent and Eminem, and soon started daydreaming about becoming a rapper himself.
He attended Vance High School where he played football and baseball, and after graduating in 2010, DaBaby enrolled at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, but dropped out after two years saying he only enrolled at a university because his parents wanted him to be a would graduate.
Career as a rapper
After two years of working various jobs to support herself financially, DaBaby decided to devote all of his spare time to making music.
He spent most of 2014 working on his debut mixtape – “Nonfiction” – which was released in 2015 but failed to gain much attention. He then released his second mixtape, “God’s Work”, followed by another mixtape, “Baby Talk”, but neither helped him build a large fan base.
DaBaby released two more mixtapes – “Billion Dollar Baby” and “Back on My Baby Jesus Sh*t” (he used the stage name Baby Jesus for a while) – and these mixtapes were noticed by Arnold Taylor, the band’s South Coast president .
Arnold drew DaBaby and helped him find gigs in North Carolina clubs, and in 2018, DaBaby gained more recognition with his mixtape “Blank Blank” distributed by Roc Nation, and this earned him a multi-million dollar deal with US record label Interscope.
On September 27, 2019, DaBaby released his second studio album – “Kirk” – which topped the US Billboard 200 chart, while the lead single “Intro” peaked at #13 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. In early 2020, DaBaby was nominated for two annual Grammy Awards for Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance, both for his single “Suge”, following the release of his third album “Blame It on Baby”, which topped the Billboard 200 Chart and sold approximately 125,000 copies.

Most recently, on July 27, 2020, DaBaby released his single “No Dribble” which was later included in the remastered version of “Blame It on Baby” released on August 4.
Problems with the law
DaBaby was involved in a shooting in Huntersville, North Carolina when a 19-year-old boy was shot and killed – DaBaby stated he acted in self-defense but pleaded guilty to carrying a concealed weapon. He was arrested in January 2020 after Miami police learned of his warrant in Texas – DaBaby and his friends robbed a music promoter who paid DaBaby $20,000 when he was supposed to pay him $30,000.
He was released after two days.
Most recently, in November 2020, DaBaby’s brother Glen Johnson committed suicide with a gun.
Love life and wife
Rumors are circulating on the internet that DaBaby was once married to his high school sweetheart Ashley Kirk. These began to spread after an unknown person found DaBaby’s high school yearbook in which wrote one of the students “The most inspiring person in his life was his wife, Ashley Kirk.
DaBaby denied the rumors and stated that the girl was his best friend as she often lent him her car and helped him with homework, but that’s all.
DaBaby has a daughter with a woman named MeMe, and in November 2019 he announced he was expecting another child without clarifying that it wasn’t with MeMe – he later stated that he and MeMe were no longer together at the time he slept with another woman.
