Howard attended Washington-Rose Elementary school, then Roosevelt Junior-Senior High School, where he became interested in playing the piano and dancing. He was a member of the band The Electric Comicbook, but they broke up after Howard moved back to South Side High School. He enrolled at Boston University — where he reportedly became involved in the drug scene — but later obtained the best possible operator license from the Radio Engineering Institute of Electronics, located in Fredericksburg, Virginia.
Howard was five when he became interested in radio, and his father placed a microphone and other equipment in the basement of their home for Howard to practice his radio skills.
