Early life and career beginnings
DC Young Fly grew up in Adamsville, western Atlanta, in a troubled, high-crime neighborhood. He was exposed to many of these crimes during his childhood and was even convinced to get involved in drug activities when he was 13. He befriended a group calling themselves Da Crew, hence he used the DC name to honor the people. he grew up with it.
In 2006, his parents divorced when he attended Benjamin E. Mays High School – he was mostly a class clown. He had a good school life and discovered his passion for comedy.
He eventually left crime and led a straight life after the death of his brother, who was murdered a few years later. His father suffered from Alzheimer’s disease and complications from the disease also led to his passing. His brother dreamed of becoming a rapper, and Young Fly committed to continue his brother’s dream as they shared the same interest. He also had a tattoo on his forehead so that he would never forget his brother.
While DC Young Fly was working on his music and releasing tracks independently, he found fame online in 2013 with the creation of the app Vine, a service that helped popularize the short video format we now see with Instagram and TikTok.
It allowed users to create looping clips that can be edited with music and uploaded through a social platform. During the height of its popularity, it helped many unknowns to become famous as popular Viners.
Some of the most popular online celebrities were comedians, who used the app to share memes, short skits, and the like. Young Fly used the platform to share his music, but what made him famous was his roasts of popular celebrities. This led to him gaining hundreds of thousands of subscribers during the height of Vine’s popularity. His roasts became so popular that Kevin Hart even did DC roasts himself, making him even more popular.
Hart even said Fly had a career in stand-up if he wanted to pursue it that badly.
The End of Vine – Wild N’ Out
Finally Vin finished – the death knell was dealt when other competitors started integrating the same features it had. Many Viners retired from their online careers, while others, such as DC Young Fly, moved to other platforms such as YouTube.
