McTavish was born in the Scottish city of Glasgow. He is the son of Alec and Ellen McTavish. His family, especially his father, was politically active and there was much political debate in their home. McTavish’s family moved away from Glasgow when he was a child, and he lived in Canada, the United States and England before settling in New Zealand. During school, he and a friend would write and perform comedy skits, which led to his drama teacher asking him to cover a role in Sheridan’s The Rivals after the lead actor fell ill. He attended Queen Mary University in London, where he obtained a degree in English literature.
