Google Fiber’s 5-Gig and 8-Gig Plans Launch Early 2023
Google Fiber will offer 5Gbps and 8Gbps levels from early 2023 (through 9to5Google). The company is pitching this new offering to people such as creative professionals, those who regularly work “in the cloud” or with large amounts of data, and households with many people who share the Internet, according to a blog post by Product Management Director Amalia O’Sullivan.
“5 Gig makes it easier to upload and download simultaneously regardless of file size,” writes O’Sullivan. “And 8 Gig ensures that everything you do online happens in near real-time (no jitter and low latency).” The tiers each come with a Wi-Fi 6 router and up to two mesh extenders with professional installation, but you can use your own router if you prefer. The 5 Gbps tier costs $125 per month, while the 8 Gbps tier costs $150 per month. Both have symmetric upload and download speeds.
Some lucky Google Fiber users can test these new fast levels early. “If you’re a current Google Fiber customer, especially in Utah, Kansas City, or West Des Moines, you could try these new products as early as next month,” says O’Sullivan. If that describes you, enter this shape eligible for the program. I’ll be watching you jealously from afar with my meager 100Mbps download speeds.
