Early life and family

Alexis Antetokounmpo was born on August 26, 2001 in Athens, Greece. Alex, along with his older brothers Giannis, Kostas and Thanasi, was raised by their parents Charles and Veronica Antetokounpo, who are Nigerian immigrants, in a poor neighborhood in Sepolia, Athens. His eldest brother, Francis, a professional soccer player, was left with his grandparents when his parents moved from Lagos, Nigeria, to Greece in 1991. Undocumented, his parents struggled to find ways to earn money to support the family.

His older brothers did odd jobs to help their parents, and even when Giannis and Thanasi played for a Greek basketball team, they sometimes missed basketball practice just so they could sell things on the street to make money. The Antetokounmpo brothers were stateless for years because they had no papers – being born in Greece, they were not automatically eligible for citizenship. Finally, he and his brother Kostas became full Greek citizens in 2016, while their older brothers got their citizenship a few years earlier.
