Ford steps up production of the Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning to cement its status as the No. 2 EV seller

Ford is enjoying its new status as the No. 2 electric vehicle seller in the US. To maintain it, the automaker is increasing production of its range of plug-in vehicles, including the Mustang Mach-E, F-150 Lightning and E-Transit.

Ford this week began accelerating production of Mustang Mach-Es, making changes to the plant that will allow it to double its hourly assembly and take its annual production run to a target of 210,000 units by the end of 2023. Ford also announced it would cut prices on the Mustang Mach-E after the No. 1 EV seller, Tesla, also cut its prices.

This is the second time that Ford has announced it will ramp up production of the Mustang Mach-E this year. Last January, the company said it would open new space at its plant and add new equipment in a bid to increase production to 130,000 vehicles per year, from a previous target of 78,000.

Now Ford says F-150 Lightning production is on track to triple this year, aiming for an annual production rate of 150,000 by the end of 2023. The company has sold 19,217 F-150 Lightnings since deliveries began in 2022 , with 3,600 copies sold in the first two months of this year alone. Ford said it will invest $2 billion in three Michigan plants to boost production of the electric truck.

The company is also adding an extra crew to its Kansas City plant to boost production of its E-Transit van. The company aims for an annual production increase of 38,000 for both the E-Transit and the gas-powered version. Ford’s popular gas-powered vehicles, the Bronco Sport and Maverick pickup, are also receiving production target increases.

The news is sure to please any customer still waiting for their Ford EV to arrive. Still, Ford continues to grapple with quality issues given the unfortunate distinction of being the automaker issuing the most recalls in 2022. Markups are also a problem for Ford, and the F-150 Lightning in particular has been hit hard by extra dealer costs. In addition to pressuring dealers to cool down on the markups, the company seems to be betting that an increase in supply will also help lower prices.
