When he was 15, Duane joined an outlaw biker club called Devils Disciples, and left home with them. When he was 23, he was sent to prison to serve five years after being convicted of first-degree murder. However, he spent only a year and a half in Texas State Penitentiary, but during this time his wife La Fonda left him and married his friend. While in prison, Dakota stopped a person from escaping and received “a Correction Officer congratulatory note,” which motivated him to become a bounty hunter.

He rose to fame after capturing Max Factor in Mexico on June 18, 2003 – Max was a rapist and a drug dealer who fled the US during his trial.

Duane was helped by his son Leland and their friend Tim, but the three, as well as Max Factor, were arrested by Mexican authorities, as bounty hunting is illegal in Mexico. After being released on bail, Duane and the others escaped to the US, where they were arrested by US Marshalls because the Mexican government had issued a warrant against them, but the US decided not to extradite them and were released on bail. On August 30, 2004, the first episode of Duane’s TV series “Dog the Bounty Hunter” was released, and the series eventually ran for eight seasons before ending in 2012.

On September 25, 2012, his new show “Dog and Beth: On the Hunt” aired, featuring the entire Chapman family, and ran for three seasons before ending in 2016.

Duane has been married five times, four ending in divorce, first to La Fonda Sue Honeycutt from 1972-’77, then Anne M. Tegnell from 1979-’82, and the same year he married Lyssa Rae Brittain who was the reason behind his divorced Anne, but they divorced in 1991. His fourth wife was Tawney Marie from 1991 to 2002, while he married his (so far) last wife Beth Smith in 2006; she died in 2019.
