Huh… The release date of the anime Chainsaw Man is supposedly in October 2022, the anime season in the fall of 2022… Really? It looks like April Fools’ Day came early in 2022 for the anime fandom.
Such “announcements” were common at the recent Jujutsu Kaisen 0 movie fest. The Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 release date was actually confirmed for 2023. That’s exciting news, if not predictable, and yet all of a sudden there was a circular saw and people were buzzing frantically on social media announcing the Chainsaw Man is coming.
Some social media posts on Twitter and other platforms even claimed that the Studio MAPPA staff made Chainsaw Man’s anime announcement during the Jujutsu Kaisen event!
But why would the anime production committee on multiverse ever announce Chainsaw Man’s all-time release date now and risk the newer TV show series being overshadowed by JJK hype? After all, Studio MAPPA is on the production committee for both Chainsaw Man and Jujutsu Kaisen, so they have a vested financial interest in ensuring that both anime TV series gain maximum exposure and achieve international success.
There was even one Twitter profile that called itself “Anime News Network” and got everyone excited. But one look at the actual Twitter handle should have instantly excited everyone, as it was actually @lgbtbeam, an account known for trolling fake news. Some people purposely retweet the claim with the intention of trolling their friends in the anime fandom.
It didn’t help at all that official accounts like @CHAINSAWMAN_PR and @MAPPA_Info said nothing at all about Chainsaw Man’s alleged October 2022 release date, let alone the official website†

No matter how you cut it, these alleged Chainsaw Man anime news announcements failed the sniff test. And I say this as someone who was tired of staying up all night to cover the Jujutsu Kaisen event in Japan while working in the United States (damn, 14 hour time difference!).
Anyway, some anime news sites rushed to publish this latest news without checking the facts first. The fake news even made its way to Spanish and French news sites.
The release date of the anime Chainsaw Man in 2022 is really official
The main reason the fake news went viral so quickly is that it’s actually credible based on what’s been officially announced in the past:
In December 2020, Studio MAPPA’s anime adaptation Chainsaw Man was first announced. The first Chainsaw Man trailer was released on June 27, 2021. On December 18, 2021, it was confirmed that MAPPA had planned a release date for Chainsaw Man 2022.
At this point, a release of Chainsaw Man in Spring 2022 is out of the question, and it would be odd for MAPPA to announce an overall timeframe just 4.5 months before Summer 2022. Logically, only fall 2022 remains as the only realistic Chainsaw Man release date target.
Based on MAPPA’s work page, their plan to release in 2022 still hasn’t changed. Heaven forbid, but there’s always the possibility that the increasingly crowded animation studio will postpone Chainsaw Man until 2023, so none of the animators need be chained (metaphorically) to their desks.
Chainsaw Man Trailer and MAPPA Staff
The previously released Chainsaw Man anime trailer gave anime fans an idea of what to expect from the animation quality.
The Chainsaw Man anime project is headed by director Ryū Nakayama (director of Black Clover, Jujutsu Kaisen Season 1 Episode). Tatsuya Yoshihara (Black Clover) is the action director. Writer Hiroshi Seko (Ajin, Attack on Titan Season 4) is responsible for the scripts.
Artist Kazutaka Sugiyama (Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation) is the human character designer, while Kiyotaka Oshiyama (DEVILMAN crybaby, Space Dandy) is the diabolical character designer. Makoto Nakazono (DARLING in the FRANXX, Little Witch Academia) is the technical director. Composer Agraph/Kensuke Ushio (DEVILMAN crybaby, A Silent Voice) makes the music.
Let’s hope we don’t have to wait until 2023 for the Chainsaw Man release date. Stay tuned!
