Dakota Meyer, her ex-husband, was born and raised in a small town near Columbia, Kentucky, and graduated from Green County High School. Meyer had never considered joining the Marine Corps. He considered joining the army. When a naval recruiter told him in high school that he wouldn’t be able to join the Marine Corps, he joined the next day. He described it as a challenge. After enlisting, he traveled to Paris Island and then to Camp Geiger in North Carolina for military training. He was stationed in Hawaii for the next four years after completing his training. His first deployment was in July 2007 for 45 to 60 days in Iraq, but he was brought home early after being bitten by a spider and losing a lot of nerve.

He also underwent two operations in Iraq. He returned to Germany for a short time before returning home to rehabilitate his hand. He trained for a few more years before taking over a sniper unit and becoming the captain of the team. When the artillery sergeant indicated that they needed five volunteers to go to Afghanistan in 2009, he raised his hand and was elected.

In July he traveled to Afghanistan. He was serving in the Fourth Marine Division at the time. They were in Kunar province, northern Afghanistan. They lived on a small base with four Americans and 80 Afghans, and their goal was to advise, train and transition them to take over their country. Meyer claims things started to go wrong on September 6. They flew 12 to 14 107 missiles directly to their base. The missile hit one of the people he was with and severed his leg. From there everything just went bad. They returned to discuss it once the protracted battle was over. They were told they were going on a mission.

He then searched for his colleagues for four to six hours, but could not find them. They planned everything. It was ambushed with 100 to 150 enemy fighters just above them. Lieutenant Michael Johnson, one of four Marines trapped in the city, radioed for a backup artillery operation. Nevertheless, the officers in charge of operations disputed that it was too close to the community. The last he heard from him was that if those bullets were not handed to him, he would die. Meyer was aware of the seriousness of the situation at the time.

They spent the next six hours disposing of corpses and trying to save them. He and Rodriguez Chavez would drive the dead and wounded from the valley, only to return and run the gauntlet of fire once again. During his various travels, his primary goal was to locate and rescue his friends. On their first trip, he managed to pick up and transport a group of Afghans. He was still under fire as he walked out of the valley with his friends’ corpses. The table has never moved. He fled because there was too much shooting. He jumped into the trench while jogging and landed on Gunnery Sergeant Johnson. He was no longer alive. In reality, they were all dead.

Lieutenant Michael Johnson was the first, followed by Sergeant Edwin Johnson, Sergeant Aaron Kenefick and Corpsman James Doc Layton. Meyer said in an interview that if he had killed enough people the war would have ended, and if he had saved enough people none of his comrades would have died. He went on to say that it would have been spectacular if they had bought them alive. Meyer was awarded the Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest military decoration, on September 15, 2011. Former President Barack Obama presented him with the Medal of Honor.
