BTS now has their own Lego set – with figures of all seven band members
We don’t have all the answers to those questions yet (although I need an answer to the Lego Movie stats). However, we’ve finally got our first glimpse of this much-anticipated Lego set, which is (quite accurately) the set of the Dynamite video clipcomplete with minifigures of the seven party members.
The set was based on a fan-submitted idea from two BTS fans and Lego builders. “I watched the video clip over and over and tried to capture its essence in the LEGO bricks,” writes 20-year-old Josh Bretz, one of the creators, in the Lego press release.
The 749-piece set features some of the music video’s primary settings, including the donut shop, the record store, the basketball hoop, and that ice cream truck that’s always hanging around. The podium is also present in the back, although that replica is not as faithful. All pieces are modular, so you can move them around.
It is striking that Jungkook’s bedroom is missing from the opening verse, although I understand that recreating all those posters with Legos would have been quite a job.
Lego has laid down some specific details; elements such as the graffiti behind the basketball hoop, the addresses on the shop windows and the Open sign next to the donut shop are beautifully constructed. The green arrow should be at an angle bit further down, but I know I’m getting into the weeds here. You also can’t imitate the plane flying over the second chorus, but you can let Jungkook keep the donut outside the donut shop, which is comfort enough.
The company has done a pretty impressive job of replicating each member’s hairstyle, since we’re talking about… Lego hair. For example, Jungkook’s black hair is easy to distinguish from J-Hope’s black hair.
The seven figurines are dressed in the outfits the group wears from the second chorus of the song (rather than the costumes from their previous solo recordings or the pastel-colored clothes from the beginning and end). Lego doesn’t offer multiple minifigures for a costume change (and at a US price of $99.99, it’s already not the cheapest piece of BTS merchandise you can buy). In any case, the figurines have several expressions; for example, you can make RM wink or just seem a little pensive, while Jungkook has both a smile and the bewildered look of his iconic donut shot.
This Lego set goes on sale in March. While you wait, check out the photos Lego sent, where the company has made an admirable effort to make the figurines look like they’re doing dance moves with their aerobically limited limbs.
