Early life and education
Amy was raised alongside Ben in the Upper West Side of Manhattan, New York City by their father Jerry Stiller, a comedian and actor, and their mother Anne Meara, who was also a comedian and actress. Anne was Irish Catholic but adopted Reform Judaism after marrying Jerry.
Amy decided she wouldn’t follow either religion, but the family celebrated both Christmas and Hanukkah.
It was Ben who first started acting, and after winning his first roles, Amy decided she wanted to be an actress too. She was a member of her high school drama club and acted in most of the plays there, and after matriculation she enrolled in Circle in the Plein Theater Schoolgraduated with a bachelor’s degree in theater in 1981 (two-year program).
