Krafton just reported that Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI) has surpassed 100 million registered users. This only confirms the game’s status as one of, if not, the most popular video game in the country, and one that continues to grow by leaps and bounds every year.

BGMI was released in July 2021 following the ban of Krafton’s PUBG Mobile in the country. The game took off and generated a lot of hype around launch time, and its success has only grown since then.

The game’s popularity has been helped in large part by a strong esports ecosystem, something Krafton has focused on from the start. The publisher has reportedly invested nearly $100 million USD in local esports and entertainment startups in India to get the ball rolling for the gaming and esports startup ecosystem in India.

The future certainly looks bright for the game and it seems that tournaments for the game are only getting bigger every year.

The game’s first launch in July last year was one of the biggest gaming events in India as fans have been waiting for the game for quite some time. PUBG Mobile was the most popular video game in India for many years, but the game, along with several other apps, was banned in the country in 2020.

As a result, Krafton chose to change several aspects of PUBG Mobile and release Battlegrounds Mobile India in 2021. Krafton has managed to cultivate and build quite a ecosystem around the game in the year it has been out and it will be interesting to see what awaits players in the coming years.
