Arrested Development remains on Netflix

Arrested development don’t leave Netflix anymore. The streamer announced on Twitter that the show will remain on the platform after licensing issues nearly led to its removal.

While Netflix initially planned to remove all five seasons of the show on March 15, including the two produced by Netflix, that never happened. That’s because Netflix has signed a deal with Disney-owned 20th Century Studios, which still owns the rights to the series after it originally premiered on Fox in 2003, according to a report of Vulture.

Under the terms of the new deal, Vulture reports that Netflix will get exclusive streaming rights to the series, and that the first three seasons of the show will eventually leave Hulu later this year (sorry, Hulu subscribers). The deal will also reportedly allow Disney to sell the linear TV rights to all five seasons, meaning the show could end up on any television network, whether it’s Disney’s or not.

Arrested development, starring Jason Bateman, Michael Cera, Portia de Rossi, the late Jessica Walter and many other stars, has long been a Netflix staple. (It was certainly one of the very first series I watched when I first subscribed to Netflix almost a decade ago now.) Not to mention the show is also one of Netflix’s very first original series. After the streamer recorded Arrested development after its cancellation on Fox in 2006, Netflix has revived it for two (somewhat disappointing) seasons, one of which debuted in 2013 and another landed on the platform in two separate installments in 2018 and 2019.
