Amazon is reportedly making a Tomb Raider TV show and movie
earlier Friday, The Hollywood Reporter said that Amazon is developing a TV series based on the Tomb Raider video game franchise with scripts written by Phoebe Waller-Bridge. But apparently that’s not all: later in the day deadline confirmed the report on the TV series and added a new one Tomb Raider film is also in the works at Amazon Studios.
Details are light on this new one Tomb Raider adjustments, though THR says that while Waller-Bridge will serve as a writer and executive producer on the show, she will not star. The show is apparently still in development, so we probably shouldn’t expect it anytime soon.
This new series and movie could end up as more major video game franchise adaptations for Amazon, which announced in December that it was launching a God of war TV program. But it also marks Amazon’s further investment in the Tomb Raider franchise, as the company will also publish the next one Tomb Raider game from Crystal Dynamics. Amazon did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Video game adaptations are on the rise: Netflix’s Cyberpunk: Edge Runners was a hitwhile HBOs The last of us was just renewed for a second season after just two episodes. Hopefully Amazon can bring a similar level of quality as those shows to the new Tomb Raider series and movie. (I never saw the eldest Tomb Raider movies, but I understand they aren’t great.)
Updated January 27, 8:17 PM ET: Added deadline report on a Tomb Raider film in the works and noted that Netflix had released a previously announced Tomb Raider anime.
