He was raised in Leeds by his mother, after his father left the family when Charles was one year old – his mother remarried and gave birth to two half-brothers named John Glenn and Daryl Glenn, but when Charles was 11, his stepfather was killed in a car accident. Charles attended Leeds High School and as he was one of the tallest kids in school, he started playing basketball. He was soon spotted by a scout from Auburn University, where he went to college to study business management, but dropped out a year before graduating and began playing in 1984 for the Philadelphia 76ers in the National Basketball Association (NBA).
