Matilda the musical by Roald Dahl is currently available on Netflix. Alisha Weir, Lashana Lynch and Emma Thompson play central roles in the musical. While Weir plays the eponymous Matilda Wormwood, Thompson plays the main antagonist, Miss Agatha Trunchbull. Lynch, on the other hand, portrays Miss Jennifer Honey.

Dennis Kelly wrote the script for the movie, which was directed by Matthew Warchus. The new movie is a new take on the Tony and Olivier Award-winning Broadway musical (2011) based on Dahl’s 1988 book Matilda, according to the synopsis:

“A remarkable child with a bright intellect and creative imagination, Matilda dares to take on her tyrannical parents and headmaster to rewrite her story with miraculous results.”

The film was theatrically released on Friday, December 9, 2022, ahead of its OTT release.

Matilda Wormwood, the role of Alisha Weir in Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical, is characterized as an incredibly intelligent girl who makes bold judgments without hesitation. Critics have praised her performance, but Weir admits working with Emma Thompson was “a bit nerve-racking,” but not for the reason you might assume. She told Ashley and Company:

“It was a bit scary when I first saw her with all her prosthetics. I was scared, but so were the other young people. She offered her arms for all the youngsters to run in while we were shooting. And we all walked over to hug her.

Alisha Weir stated that she was initially concerned because Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical was her debut film and the cast included several senior performers. They eventually became mentors to her and taught her the skills of the trade. Alisha Weir also confessed that she was unaware that the sets would be overcrowded with people at all times because she was unaware of the real shooting procedure. She mentioned:

“I felt a little nervous because I didn’t know if they were all looking at me. But after observing everyone else, I came to the conclusion that you just have to be trusted. They are only performing their duties.”

Born on September 26, 2009, the actress was 11/12 years old when shooting began. Her role required a Southern English accent, which Weir excelled at. In addition, Warchus, the film’s director, said hundreds of children auditioned for the part, but Weir was notable for her “excellent” listening skills. He explained to Express.co.uk:

“That’s incredibly crucial because if you listen carefully, you can accept the direction and also listen and respond to the people you’re doing a scene with.”

He went on to say that the adolescent is a “very fast, intuitive and instinctive performer”, and that “most of her scenes in the film” were shot in a few takes. Alisha Weir told Express about when she informed her family that she had received the critical part. She stated the following:

“It was my mom’s birthday, so everyone was stunned. They couldn’t believe it, were overjoyed for me and couldn’t wait for me to start.”

Alisha Weir was previously seen in Michael Tully’s Don’t Leave Home. The horror thriller was launched in 2018. Alisha Weir also played Laura in five episodes of Darklands (2019). She also provided the voice of Primrose in Two by Two: Overboard! MVW Agency is in charge of Weir. Weir’s siblings are also passionate about the performing arts. According to their mother Jane, who spoke to the Irish Examiner last month, her eldest sister Katie Jane graduated from musical theater school in November 2022, while her middle sister Emma is studying film, music and theatre.
