15 states with unemployment levels below the national average
Despite all the chatter of a slowing labor market, unemployment fell in most US states in April.
According to facts according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics released last week, 16 states had lower unemployment rates in April compared to last year and 14 states had month-over-month declines. In addition, all U.S. states plus the District of Columbia, with the exception of Rhode Island, reported more people at work in April than last year.
In addition, 17 states had an unemployment rate below the national average of 3.4%.
South Dakota had the lowest unemployment rate in April at 1.9%, followed by Nebraska at 2%, and New Hampshire and North Dakota (both at 2.1%).

In contrast, Nevada, despite having the highest unemployment rate in the country (5.4%), had the largest annual increase in employment at 4.2%. New Mexico, with an unemployment rate slightly above the national average of 3.5%, also had the largest year-over-year decline in unemployment, with a 0.8% decline.
